How To Make Your DIY Essential Oils At Home

Hello guys, hope you had a great work week. I have been playing around and experimenting with a lot of things lately – life of a naturalista– and i am greatly excited to share these DIY tips with you.

What Essential Oils are:

Essential oils are known for their medicinal and health purposes across various cultures in terms of aromatherapy, beauty care, natural medicinal treatments  and natural hair care purposes.

In ancient times, the Jews and Egyptians made essential oils by soaking the plants in oil and then filtering the oil through a linen bag. These healing oils are rapidly growing in popularity because they act as natural medicine without any side effects.

Essential oils are known to come in different fragrances basically because the particles in essential oils come from distilling or extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels.

Why They Are Significant

  • They are therapeutic and non- toxic
  • Promotes emotional and physical well being
  • They have antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • They promote healing
  • They help promote healthy hair and scalp; and skin

The list is endless

How To Make Your Own Essential Oil

I have discovered that most oils sold out there don’t come in their purest form simply because of how they are either extracted or how they are preserved to help promote their shelf life.

Adulterated essential oils may often smell acceptable to the untrained nose, but because they are extended with synthetic chemicals or diluted with vegetable oil it makes them extremely poor value for money. Not only that, but if an essential oil has been standardized, adulterated or adjusted in any way it simply won’t be as effective as it ought to be.

The best and safest way to make your essential oil is by cold press method and my certified choice of cold press is the oil i infuse myself. This i can be sure is 100% pure and safe.

So lets get started.

Hibiscus, Peppermint Essential Oil

Hibiscus oil is very good for hair loss, dandruff removal, hair regrowth, making hair thicker and for healthy hair.

This was my first experimentation of making my own essential oil and i loved it. There are two ways of making this oil:

  1. by using fresh handpicked hibiscus petals and peppermint leaves or;
  2. using hibiscus, peppermint herbal tea bags

How to 1

Separate the petals of hibiscus flowers, add peppermint leaves and place it in a wide bowl. Pour coconut oil, olive oil or sesame oil in the bowl, just enough to cover the flowers/leaves. I prefer using coconut oil because it has all round benefits.

Let it sit in the sun for a week so as to extract all the nutrients in the herbs and strain the infused oil. Keep in an air-tight container and i’d advise to use this within 6 months of infusion

How to 2

This method is a substitute for those who are unable to get fresh herbs.Get some hibiscus and peppermint teabags. Unravel the contents in a glass container, pour some coconut oil over it and leave in the sun for at least two weeks – this is because the herbs in tea bags are super dried. To extract them therefore, you need to keep them in the oil much longer before finally straining them and storing them for use.

Citrus Essential Oil

Citrus oils help to neutralise acid in your body and stimulate the immune system to fight infections. They also have uplifting, invigorating and anti-depressant qualities. They are extracts of grapefruit, lemons, limes, mandarins, oranges and tangerines.

How to

I always use orange peels for this because it has anti-tumoral and anti-coagulant properties and most importantly, it gives a refreshing smell.

Wash the back of your orange before peeling the skin. Place these peels in a glass container, pour in enough coconut oil to cover it. Place mixture in the sun for 2 weeks and strain the oil. Enjoy the benefits of this oil for your day to day beauty care.

Rosemary Ginger Oil

Rosemary is known for its ability to boost memory, improve mood, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, protect the immune system, stimulate circulation, detoxify the body, protect the body from bacterial infections, prevent premature aging, and heal skin conditions.

I am head over-heels in love with this blend. It is a great oil blend for my whipped cream.

How to

Get some dried rosemary leaves and ginger roots in a glass jar. Pour in a mixture of coconut-almond oil enough to cover the herbs and leave for 3 weeks. The ginger aroma is extra soothing. Strain oil and store in an air-tight container for use.

Infused oils and essential oils aren’t the same. Both have their uses, but with the exception of citrus peels. the majority of essential oils are made with steam distillation. Even if using the same plant, infusing will not extract the same components as distillation (though that can be good, esp. when working with children and pets).

I live where it’s cold most of the year. Is there a way to do this without natural sunlight?

      Hello,

You can go about it using the heat-double boiler method but you have to be careful because for some, you need low heat to infuse and for some you need the heat on high so i’d advise you start with low heat and increase with time until your oil starts changing colour .
      Hope this helps
